    Buying a handgun by state

I know in PA we don't have to have a license to buy a handgun. The most we do is fill out a second form for the PASP (which I still believe is against state law, but thats a different topic). I've heard some states require you to have a license to buy a handgun and that you can't get a handgun unless you have this license. Which states have this? I'm assuming it's pretty much the usual suspects. Are there gun friendly states that have it too? I don't think in MD you need a license to buy a handgun but i've heard states like New Jersey you do. Anyone care to elaborate what is required in their respective states?

We still fill out the usual form(s) here in Arkansas. No special license needed. If you have a permit for CCW, you get to buy and leave, and they will do the paperwork later. If you don't have a permit, you'll fill out all the paperwork and wait for them to make the call before you leave with a purchase. Sometimes this could save you thirty minutes depending. All they do is make a copy of your DL and permit.

If you really want to know, check out the Brady Campaign website, they have all that info to see which states they "like" and grade higher.

The states with "better" grades, most likely have a licensing requirement for purchase.

This is a great website for CCW rules state-by-state:

In FL, you fill out the 4473 and they do the NICS call in.

If you have a CWFL, you get approved and out the door you go.

Without a CWFL, there is a waiting period to pick up your handgun.

One caveat - the FL law allows localities to specify a waiting period above and beyond the state requirement.

Blame it on Sixto - now that is a viable plan.

WA is the same... except the last one - our waiting period is fixed.

In New York you can not even handle a handgun at a dealer without first showing your licence. Also you can not purchase pistol ammo without showing your licence. Depending on the county you may have to purchare the handgun go the the Sheriffs office with all the paperwork get it added to your licence and then return to the dealer and pick up the handgun. Luck for me my licence is not from one of those counties.

Used to be in Oregon there was a waiting period. If you had a CHL, you could buy and leave with the gun.

Now, they do an instant check, regardless of if you have a CHL. After you are approved and fill out the (stupid) paperwork, you can leave with the gun.

Actually, most stores here in NY (at least in Ulster County) do sell ammo off the shelf, with the exception of 9mm. I don't know why they consider 9mm more "lethal" than .38 or .45, but that's the rule, at least at Gander Mountain. Other stores just keep larger ammo behind the counter, but I've never been "carded" when buying ammo.

I'd be interested what stores in NY are checking permits.

I have had to show my licence to purchase 45acp, 40 s&w, 9mm and 454 cassul at both Dicks sporting goods and Gander Mountain in the Syracuse area.

Maryland does not require a license, but does have required training. The training is a video (<1 hour) and a card is issued. Military (active and retired) can use their ID card in lieu of the State training card.

There is also state paperwork, almost a duplicate of the Federal, and a multi day waiting period.

No permit to purchase, no waiting period in Montana.

NICS is waived with concealed weapons permit.
