Question what to look for in a 1911

alright. im starting to think its about time for me to get a "real" 1911 (.45 government). For those who dont know, i currently have a kimber ultra aegis II (9mm defender) and love it. My kimber will remain my main carry gun. my next one will be mainly a range gun (and also maybe winter carry).
i want a nice gun, one thats very accurate, built to last forever, etc.
I would like as much info as possible about.. well everything.
    - what options are there for 1911s and what of these options should i choose / whats the advantages and disadvantages of each? (example, ambidextrous safety (which i dont want, but would like to be able to maybe switch it to lefty if i had to), bobbed hammer, etc)
    - what price range should i look at? whats the best for the money?
i have the money for a nice custom type one, and would kind of like one, but i know i should be saving my money for other things , so i donno about that yet.
    - obviously a question will be what manufacturer to go for. i know everyone has their opinions, and it depends on the price range, but tell me your fav anyways.

im really just not sure yet exactly what i want. so i need something to think about. give me all the info & opinions ya got!

edit: i also will be wanting a .22 conversion kit for it. so keep that in mind, and who makes the best one and why?

I read your post a couple of times and it seems that you are looking for an all steel, 5 inch 1911 for range use. I also sense that you really don't want to spring for a custom like Baer, Brown or Wilson, but instead are in the $1000 range which would get you a Colt, Kimber, S&W, Sig or equivalent 1911.

For this type of gun I would tend to look for adjustable sights, a good trigger pull and a nice beavertail grip safety to protect your hand from hammer bite. I think all the brands I mentioned above are good candidates, and personally I am partial to Colts. I have three Gold Cups that I shoot frequently, 2 in .45 and one in 10mm, and would recommend them as a good choice. The Series 80 stainless shown below is the one I use the most, with the original hammer and "tang" grip safety replaced by a Wilson Combat beavertail and hammer.

i am open to the more expensive custom guns.
but it kinda depends on how much better they really are.
out of the custom ones, what would you recommend?

and yea i agree, adjustable sights and good beaver tail is a must.

+1 for Baer being best value. I think I'd take a TRS with the 1.5" package for best value from Baer though...JMO

Though specifically addressing the use of a 1911 as a duty weapon, this article may be of value as much of the information presented is relevant.

Baer offers an upgrade for IIRC $300 - he guarantees the gun will shoot 1.5" groups at 50 yards. The guns come with a test target. I got it on my gun, which was a full custom. The normal guns still shoot at least 3" groups at 50 yards (1.5"@25) - I just like being able to blame myself for anything that isn't overlapping the X. Plus I was in for a penny, in for a pound.

For adjustable sights I'd look at a PII - I hadn't noticed that you wanted that. GunBroker.com guns: Les Baer 5'' Premier II .45ACP 45 (item: 91010826 ends: Feb-04-08 1007 AM)

Lots of them on Gunbroker are overpriced - personally I'd sooner buy a new one and wait for it than get gouged.

For a Range Gun a Les Baer PII and the Marvel Conversion unit for 22 setup .. Both are pricey but worth it ..

If you will Carry it a Les Baer Thunder Ranch .. since it has fixed sights vs the PII's adjustable

I'll add a plug for a Wilson Combat CQB. they guarantee accuracy of 5 shots 1" or under at 25 yds.
I recently bought one off gunbroker that is like brand new, less than 300 rds through it for aprox 1500, also their customer service & warranty is outstanding, among the best in the business.

Here is my 1911, it is a Springfield 45 super on a 6" frame and it also shoots 45 acp without changing anything. Adjustable sights and trigger.

If you like your Kimber why not stay with them. Prices would be less than the custom made guns. You could upgrade down the road a little. Of course your age and future probably means get as many of the toys you can now before children become a drain on your finances.
