Changed that - put pick on one of my servers so hope it'll display now - plus downsized it some.

I have seen a .50 mounted on an M60A1 that reached about the color of the tips, maybe a bit darker. But in night firing on a Ft Hood tank range, in the dark, you could see the glow pretty nicely.....

    Meanwhile

    Just Curious......
What the heck sort of special steel are they using for those gun barrels???
BECAUSE...Steel usually anneals itself (AKA gets dead soft) when it gets RED HOT & would it then not be TOO SOFT to still be a workable barrel?

I am a bit out of touch re my metallurgy these days - (cerebral corrosion it's called) - but IIRC the barrel steel is not heat treated to a hardness in the first place. There is a category of steels emminently suitable for this job - I cannot remember the exact composition.

The material must however be tough and the alloy chosen will, be still fairly high carbon, but be able to withstand great fluctuations in temperature without any annealing effect.

That said - if those red hot tubes where water or oil quenched then I think we'll have trouble! Cooling however by natural (slow) radiation to atmosphere will allow the resumption of normal characteristics once more.

    Well, within reason!

Most steel starts annealing at the 400-500 range.

Red starts happening around the 1200 temps.

Those barrels are a type of manganese steel which holds its toughness at the red hot stages.

Tool bits have an addition of manganese which allows them to cut while have red hot cutting edges.

    Even so...

get the barrel red hot through extended firing and the rifling anf throat starts eroding real quick...thats the reason that most machines guns have quick change barrels....

How long would it take that thing to whip through 3000? Can't imagine it'd take that long...

    Let's say 30 secs at 6000 RPM - tho if a ''mere'' 4000 - still be 45 seconds.

I keep thinking - ''hmmm - one round of 7.62 at say 20c - that lil' excercize cost 600 bucks!!!
