SUFFOLK - A Suffolk man accidentally shot a bullet through his hand while trying to make sure his gun was safe.

Police spokeswoman Lt. Debbie George said officers were dispatched to a residence on Wood Duck Court at 6:19 p.m. on Monday after a woman called to report that her husband had accidentally shot himself.

The officers found Larry Curtiss Baines, 39, with a bullet wound in his left hand. Baines had been trying to make sure his .40-caliber semiautomatic weapon was safe when the gun discharged and fired a bullet through his hand, George said.

Baines was transported to a local hospital.

George said the incident is under investigation, but no charges have been filed.

generally a good idea to take your finger off the trigger before you try to clear it.

    Rule #2 .......... Rule #2 .......... Rule #2 .......... Rule #2 ..........

Obey that at very least and this cannot happen. So avoidable.

    Usually that's a great idea.
    And...Rule #2 helps also.

I was wondering how he shot himself while constructing a "gun safe"... :)

And I was interested in his DIY gun safe design... Oh well, at least it makes a little more sense now.

4 simple little rules, and he blew 2 of them at the very least.

Stupid is as stupid does.......... Hope he's ok.

    Cool

I'd say chances are his hand is messed up pretty bad. Probably lost function of at least a couple of his fingers.

Lucky for him his trigger finger should still be OK.

Wow and his wife called the cops on him!? What's wrong with driving to the hospital? I'd be pissed about that. Then again, I wouldn't shoot myself....

One way or another they would've been called anyway. I think it's pretty much policy these days at most hospitals to call the LEO's when folks with gunshot wounds show up.

I saw that happen at a gun show once when some one handed a loaded .25 to a guy with a table. You could have heard a pin drop afterswards. The guy with the loaded gun ran out without getting caught. The guy that handed over the loaded gun was wrong but the guy that handled it wrong and shot himself should have known better.
