The only other exception in CA that I am aware of, besides LEO, is a Film permit exception which bodyguards certainly do not qualify for. I think you are out of luck.

The CA DOJ Firearms Bureau public phone number is a good place to call. It is usually a live person answering the phone and they will usually give you an answer right there on the spot.

    My understanding of this...

If you owned the large capacity magazine for your gun in CA prior to 1/1/2000, you can use it for carry, and possession is not illegal. The limitation after 1/1/2000 is on buying, selling, importing, loaning or manufacturing a 10+ magazine. LEOs with ID can buy these magazines in CA, but I don't think that private protection people qualify. The CA DOJ website has all this information.
