    Commander question

I have a question for the 1911 people. Other than size, does a Commander feild strip the same as a full size 1911? Are there any major internal differences?

The only difference between a full size and a commander is the barrel length, there is no difference in internals or field stripping.

They field strip and completely disassemble exactly the same way.

    There are differences.

The barrel is shorter & of course the slide also.
    The barrel bushing is shorter.
The recoil spring plug and recoil spring guide are stubbier.
Naturally the recoil spring has less coils.

    That would be about it.

Are you talking specifically about a Colt Commander, or a Commander-sized 1911 from another company?

Depending on the make and individual components, there could be some significant differences in field stripping as compared to a full-/gov't-sized 1911.

Does it have a bull barrel, or standard barrel with bushing? Full-length guide rod? Reverse plug? This, and probably more that I haven't thought of, could make the breakdown of the gun a bit different.

A standard barrel type. Like a Springfeild or S&W 1911.

If it's a regular barrel (w/ bushing), as long as it has a standard guide rod and plug set up, field strip should be the same as a full-/gov't-size 1911.

Hi, first post here. I have two Springfield GI Series, full size and a commander size. Springfield calls theirs the Champion. The Commander size has a full length guide rod with no barrel bushing, so the takedown is different. These are the only 1911s I own, so can't speak to other manufacturers.
