CDC issues first "Surveillance for Violent Deaths"

Surveillance for Violent Deaths --- National Violent Death Reporting System, 16 States, 2005

Doesn't take them long to mention funding from the Joyce Foundation (anti-gun)

Just started reading, already see this little jem:

    # Legal intervention. The term "legal intervention" is used when a decedent is killed by a police officer or other peace officer (a person with specified legal authority to use deadly force), including military police, acting in the line of duty. This category excludes legal executions. Corresponding ICD-10 codes included in NVDRS are Y35.0--Y35.4, Y35.6, Y35.7, and Y89.0.

No mention of lawful self defense.

Look for the pros and antis to spin this hard.

    Edit: And this:

Self Defense shooting:self inflicted shooting in which the decedent was attempting to use a gun in self defense.

But no mention of killed in self defense!

If you'd like to write the CDC about the lack of a "killed in lawful self defense" category, here's their Contact Us link:

CDC - Contact CDC: Send Your Message

And a copy of my email:

I just finished reading the report, "Surveillance for Violent Death." In future surveillance summaries, I believe it would be of significant interest to add a category of persons killed in lawful self defense, a subject that is not addressed in the report or almost anywhere else in professional literature.
    Thank you.
