If you could only have three...

I searched before posting and was surprised that I didn't find a thread like this already. Mods, feel free to move this to off-topic if you deem appropriate.

If, for whatever imaginative and barely-plausible reasons, you could only have one handgun, one rifle, and one shotgun, what would you choose?
Optionally, why did you pick those three?

    Peace,
    Pete Zaria.

Can't answer the handgun, as I am new to this. But the rifle, my Remington pump .30'06 should do just fine. Adequate for anything I am hunting, and accurate enough. My Remington 870 12gauge, never fails to cycle, can have a short barrell for HD and a longer one for bird hunting.

If I was limited to three firearms I would go with…

Browning Hi-power for the pistol because it is small enough to conceal yet still has the capacity to be useful AND I shoot it better than a 1911 in .45 ACP.

Springfield M1A variant in .308 because it is reliable, accurate no heavier than the AR-10, is big enough to comfortably take just about any North American game, has magazines ranging from 5 rnds to 30 rnds and I find it easy to shoot.

I do not, nor have I ever owned a shotgun, just never been interested. My hope would be that the limitation would be worded in such a manner that it would allow two “long guns” rather than one rifle and one shotgun. In that case I would take a Ruger 10/22, reliable, easy to shoot fairly accurate “out of the box” good enough for small game, fun for range use and you could easily carry a plenty of ammo without any problem.

I like your taste...add a browning hipower to the mix for a great rugged handgun.

Some very interesting responses so far.

    I'll throw in mine:

    What I have now:

    Pistol: SA Mil-Spec 1911 .45 ACP
    Rifle: Win lever-action 30-30
    Shotgun: Mossberg 500

    What I'd like to have:

Pistol: I'd just customize my 1911, focusing on reliability tweaks, adding a beaver tail grip safety and night sights, and refinishing in NP3.
Rifle: SA M1A in .308 just for versatility - adequate for hunting or defense at any likely range, reliable if kept clean.
Shotgun: Scattergun Tech (870-based) Riot Gun in 12ga.

I'd want to accumulate some spare parts for each, for sure.

    Peace,
    Pete Zaria.

    Handgun

    4" Ruger GP100

It conceals well and can be loaded for defensive use or hunting.

    Rifle

    Remington 700 Bolt Action 30-06

It can take any game animal in North America has can be loaded to various power levels depending on the game.

    Shotgun

    Remington 12 Guage Pump

    Nothing more need be said.

Well I really guess it depends on the situation but I think some basic considerations are in order.

    Rifle

It better be something in a well established and very available caliber. 223, 30.06, 30-30, 308 all come to mind off the top as both established and readily available about anywhere. I saw at least one person mention a Winchester Short Mag and I think that could be a catastrophic mistake should you need ammo and the only places that are available to you are the typical bait and deli shops that keep just a few of the more popular calibers around.

Then of course comes the semi-auto versus bolt action issue. If the situation makes finding food more important than defending myself than I take the bolt action with a great scope. If defense is going to be more important than I take the auto loader.

    Pistol
Let me first say that I don't own a glack and probably never will because the guns don't fit me well but in this scenario I will take a Glock or a 1911 in either 9mm or 45acp for two reasons. Availability of parts to repair and availability of ammo.

    Shotgun
I think any reliable 12 gauge will work but in my case either an 870 or my mossy 500 again because of the availability of parts.

    Only 3? <shudder>

Handgun: Wilson Combat 1911(pick one, anyone in .45ACP)
    Shotgun: Wilson Combat Remington 870
    Rifle: SA M25 WhiteFeather(7.62 NATO)

    Hopefully someday.
