    I'm gonna do a 2000 round no-clean/no-lube test - help me pick a gun update post #33!

OK, inspired by the recent 1000 round test and questions it raised in my mind, I'm going to run a split 2000 round test. My purpose is to test a one gun for long term reliability without cleaning or lubing with the stock recoil spring and with a reduced power recoil spring to better match the reduced power 'range' ammo. Is this reasonable? I'll tell you in 2000 rounds.

Gonna be 9mm but, which gun?

    Edit:
I started to order the ammo and realized there was several different bullet weights in the same brand. At the risk of opening a Pandora's box here, wouldn't it be interesting to test 115gn, 124gn, and 147gn in the same ammo. Feel free to add your thoughts about what would be most meaningful.

All listed are good guns, but I had to vote for what I carry. Mine is a USP40, but I have never had a malfunction of any kind. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks deadeye72, you do realize I'm just gonna do 9mm? The other major calibers are just too expensive.

Since you left off the XD9, I guess I will vote for the Glock.

I would skip the Glock. I've been shooting my Glock 30 for over 6 years, 40K rounds of ammo and never lubed it once. I run my gun completely dry. Still going strong, no meaningful wear.

Yeah, I have an XD Tactical but the spring for the grip safety went flying the other day when I was...uhhh, never mind. Suffice it to say, my XD is inoperable until I get a replacement spring, and it's my understanding that SA won't sell such to the public.

I saw that you said 9mm, but I think the platform as a whole is flawless. It would be interesting to see how the different bullet weights perform. If one is more subject to failure than another. I know I used to have a Beretta 92FS that would not properly feed any 115 gr. ammo. 124gr. and 147 gr. ammo did fine.

I appreciate the info, but in the test, a G21 had 21 failures, a G20 had 3, a G22 had 50 and was disqualified, and a G19 had 2. So I don't think Glock is off the hook.

I'd be interested in seeing how the PX4 performs with no lube at all. I've gone that many rounds without cleaning, but there was lube at the start.

Me too, but my concern about doing that is the issue of increased wear on moving parts, esp. the rotating barrel and barrel lug.

Of the guns listed, I would think, the Glock, H&Ks, and not listed, XD would fair better without lube. Larry Vickers even mentioned this in an article that these guns run dry where 92FS and Sigs need to run 'wet' because of the steel slides running on aluminum frames. I tend to think the same would be true for the PX4 rotating a steel barrel on steel and a steel lug running in a steel groove - just sounds like a lube intensive arrangement.

Now it may be, with a lube like WeaponShield, the Sigs, and 92s (and PX4) could run 'dry' because WeaponShield does a surface treating thing which provides essentially a dry lube.

I'm voting for the M&P since it is the newest.

I feel that I have a good handle on the Beretta92 and Glock 19

I've run my M&P for over 1800 rounds without cleaning but I did lube it before each sesssion.
