On one, the Texas tower, those of a certain age will recall. In the course of the segment they said "a well armed populace helped keep the sniper pinned down, thereby possibly reducing the number of casualties." I haven't checked on that, but it sounds about right.
If correct, three cheers for carriers!
Wasn't the only one mentioning help from bystanders.

I saw a report on that one time, and there were guys with scoped deer rifles firing back at the guy which allowed the 2 officers to gain entry and eventually end the situation

It was actually one Texas Ranger with a civilian who got to the top of the tower and stopped the shooter.

That is correct.....that Ranger recently wrote a book on his life as a Texas Ranger....forgot the title and publisher.....but I'm keeping an eye outforit at the library. He goes into detail and speaks very positively about the armed civilians helping during that situation. I've only read a exert from that chapter but I'm hooked on finding and reading it.

Actually it was two Texas Rangers and a "civilian".
The book, I think, is called, "They call me Ranger Ray." The author is Ray Ramirez, the Texas Ranger that shot Charles Whitman on top of the Texas Tower that day.

By any chance do you remember which was number one and the details?
You have to make the shot when fire is smoking, people are screaming, dogs are barking, kids are crying and sirens are coming.

If you watch the made for TV movie starring a young Kurt Russell as the sniper, you will see a scene where a police supervisor is talking to another police officer about the civilians showing up to help. His comments to the other officer (who had complained about the civilians) was that "they've got better guns then we've got!". Indeed a lot of them showed up with scoped high powered rifles and kept the sniper in the tower pinned down long enough for then city police officer Ray Ramirez along with two others to enter the tower.
God bless our troops!

An armed society is a polite society...give 'em all guns, let the gene pool clean itself out...

Ray Ramirez was a patrolman with the Austin PD at the time of the Texas Tower shootings. Ramirez and a fellow Austin PD officer, Houston McCoy, along with an armed citizen, assaulted Charles Whitman's position at the top of the tower. Ramirez and McCoy were both credited with killing Whitman.
Ramirez joined the Texas Rangers after the incident.
Side note. Remember Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann (R. Lee Ermey) in Full Metal Jacket telling his platoon during rifle instruction that Charles Whitman was a Marine?
When you’re wounded and left on Afghanistan’s plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Just roll to your rifle and blow out your brains,
And go to your God like a soldier.

Yup my recollection was hazy, but ya know what,I wonder where all the rifles came from on such short notice hmmmm could it be in those days nobody thought that if they saw a gun they were gonna be freeking out, nope in those days guns were used for hunting and target practice people drove around with rifles and shotguns in gun racks and when people got shot at they shot back

And what can stop a motivated marine?
