.380 in a Glock 19 . . . works . . . for 1 round

So my dad and I went shooting yesterday to the range. I had brought my Glock 19 and venerable old Smith; he brought his Glock 19 and a new addition to the family -- a Bersa .380.

He hasn't shot a gun in ten years. When he first got the Glock, he ran a few hundred rounds through it to ensure reliability and since then he hasn't fired it once. Truly a carried often . . . shot little gun.

Anyway, about half an hour in to our range time he started getting ftes after the first round in every mag. He tried different mags and still the problem persisted. He then handed to me his Glock and a partially full mag and asked me to try it. He's really perplexed -- he's totally into the "infallible" Glock mantra. Before I loaded the mag in, I happened to glance down at the mag lips.

"Dad, I know what your problem is."
"What?"
"You're using .380 in a 9mm weapon."
"Oh"

What can I say. His eyes aren't what they used to be. He actually took it as a "testament" to the Glock's "versatility."



Me. I know that any gun (except Hi Point, Jennings, and Davis ) can fail you.

Be sure to clean the chamber carefully. Shooting shorter than normal rounds in an autopistol can result in material being shaved off at the front of the chamber. That material can build up and affect reliability or, in an extreme case, act as a partial obstruction.

That doesn't happen in revolvers because they headspace on the rim and there's not an abrupt step at the front of the chamber but rather a gradual taper.
