You don't want to use oil or WD-40 on hinges or locks because both will collect dust and gum up. Get a tupe of graphite powder for hinges and locks. I have two tubes one I bought while in the Army (I got out in '74) and the other I bought while in New Orleans (left in '95) when I couldn't find the first one. Between the two of them I have kept my hinges and locks working great for over 30 years. It doesn't take much.

Chances are you can just remove the side plate without anything else coming out. If that's the case there shouldn't be any problem with the WD-40 suggestion followed by some compressed air. If you clean it off it'll be just fine. Your ammo will be just fine too, though taking the extra step of not using it for carry isn't a bad idea. I'm still new to holsters though, so I have no idea about getting any smell out. Febreeze? :P
