So I'm dating this girl for about a month now and she had gone through the police academy in which she was required to own a pistol (Glock 9mm)
She says she never really liked, or cared about guns, ammo ect... just had it for the course.
So I was cleaning my rifle yesterday, and then she tells me this amazing piece of information:
"I used to clean my glock in the DISH WASHER! It passed inspection everytime and they never knew it"

Also, I was at a gun show and was talking to an armorer. I asked him how he cleans his guns. He says he completely disassembles them (not just field strip, but down to the component parts), puts everything in a bucket of Dawn dishwasher liquid and then just uses a toothbrush to rinse them off.
I did that last night on 5 of my Glocks. Works great. I now have very clean guns...and soft and smooth hands.

I've heard of lots of folks cleaning thier guns and other _metal_ parts in a dishwasher.
Thing is though that you do so in a dishwasher that is not used to clean dishes (!)
As noted you got exposure to leads and other chemicals (gun lube!) which is not exactly healthful.
Also I too would not put plastics in their for obvious reasons of weakening.
No surprise that your girl though is not into guns.
How many cops are into 'cars' or do autocross in their private life? Even as their vehicle and having an ability to drive at high skill levels are a key component of their overall academy training and can in general be critical knowledge sets toward their career.

Oh... that's right... they can handle thousands of rounds in one go... with no melted plastic bits... :rolleyes: methinks this wasn't a well thought out comment in a thread full of strange ideas.

I have been washing guns, engine parts and other "stuff" that needed a good cleaning for years. Do a complete disassemble, use HOT water, grease cutting dishwashing soap and a used tooth brush. Rinse in HOT water and blow dry with compressed air. Then spray with a water displaceing lube, wipe down and lube and assemble.
Use a brass brush on the barrels and other really dirty stuff. Works great on glocks and all other types of stuff that really needed a good cleaning. Better than chemicals. Does not remove copper or lead from barrels but does a outstanding job on grease, carbon and other fowl stuff. Plus no odor. Becareful of using the kitchen sink - it may leave a grease ring.
