Give me some recommendations for scopes for a ruger 10/22 to be used for plinking and small game hunting. I don't want to invest more in the scope than the rifle is worth so please keep that in mind

since you're talking about a 50-100 yard gun, you can spend anything from $25 to $250, and still have a 50-100 yard gun.
For cheap, there's Leapers and NCStar (both China). Both have "100 yard" scopes in the $25-50 price range that actually work pretty good. Then there's always the variants of the Bushnell Sportview line for a small investment. Lots to choose from!
My little 4-16x BSA scope does fine and has for years on my 10/22 target models for silhouette matches. True clicks, and returns to zero every time. Dependable and reasonable.
what ramrod says would be perfect....I think

The Tasco 2-10 varmint scope with mildots and AO is an excellent scope for the money for a rimfire 22 or 17 HMR or 22 magnum.
They sell for about $60 are clear as they range up to a maximum of 10 power, the mildots work slick for holdover.
I really am impressed with the cheap red dots.
Bushnell makes a great little rimfire scope for 50 bucks...

Take a little bit of time to learn about parallax. I am not an expert, but this is something that has come to my attention in the past few years from my dad. He has been spending time on pellet gun forums. Parallax is a bigger issue for pellet guns. The scope I had on my 10/22 was great at 25+ yards but was not so good up close. This was most likely due to parallax. I think Ram Rod's suggestion is probably pretty good. Like I say, I'm no expert. Check it out for yourself.
Thanks for the suggestions. I will do some looking around in the next few weeks.

Back in the day, these scopes were scrutinized for being cheap scopes. Prices were also cheaper back then too! I see they must have stood the test of time well. I depend on mine and I have the 6-24x on my heavy 10/22. Having the finger adjustable target turrets (T.T.) is worth it in itself, especially for what I use for silhouette. Like I say, quick, easy, positive click adjustments, clear glass, and adjustable objective.
I have one of the NCStar (i.e. Chinese) scopes which I am quite happy with. I was also lucky enough to buy the 10/22 with the scope rings which also allow use of the iron sights. I sighted in the iron sights for 75-80 ft. and the scope for 150. About usable range for a .22. Spending a bit extra for those scope rings is well worth it IMHO.
BTW, my computer was down for a few weeks, glad to be back!
In Oklahoma, even we liberals like guns!
Simmons is cheap, and very reliable. I have 22 .22 rifles, only one without a scope, and I have Simmons on several. Most of the others suggested will work quite well also (unless you get the proverbial lemon).

My 10/22 has one of those short Leapers scopes that you can find all over ebay; the ones advertised for the SKS.
So far it has worked fairly well. I don't remember what exactly it cost me but it wasn't much.
I just use a cheapo tasco 3x9 scope on my 10/22 its dead on at 25-50 yrds that i bought at walmart
On the 10/22 forums i read alot of people like the "Mueller 4.5-14x40 apv"
