Let's say you are building a new house from scratch. Since you can design in anything you want, would you dig a deep basement and put in a small gun range?

yes... and it would have a small kitchen, refrig, etc. with food as well....
It took me a whole .0025 sec to think about this. Yes Yes Yes. I have never once said to myself "you know, you shoot too much". the only requirement would be to make it really sound proof.
In my house? I don't know, I'm not sure I'd want to live in & around all the lead and other by-products. It's one thing to visit the range for a few minutes/hours every week, it's another thing to LIVE there.
Just my $0.02... but I might consider making one in a detached building.
With it's own once-through ventilation system.

Oh man, what a great idea!
Yes, I'd do it especially if single... if you wait until you're married to build, it might be a harder sell to the wife. If it's already built, it's a done deal.
How long are you thinking of making it?
I'd rather shoot outdoors. I'd put the extra money towards more guns and more ammo....
The lead would be a hazard. you would have to have good venting and neighbors who like to shoot . This would hold down on the noise complaints. oh yea.
Nope. Absolutely not!

Nope besides lead and smoke from powder, besides if you live in the city might be some ordinance issues

Yep, with a good ventilation system and shooting FMJs.
Or set up a good patio outside with a view of a couple hundred yards....
Yep...I would still build an outdoor range, but for a rainy day, or the Texas heat, it sure would be fun...I could set up my reloading bench at my own personal shooting range. It would be great!
There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always evil.
