It took a little practice to get proficient with the stripper clips, but once developing a good technique I have become pretty fast with them. I'm leery of putting any magazine other than the original on there. The only thing I don't like about the magizine design is that there is no way to reload without empyting the weapon.

www.aimsurplus.com seems to be offering some good deals on Yugo SKS's these days.

They have decent prices on case lots of SKS ammo.

RE cleaning out the cosmoline - the easiest way I have found is with very hot water - almost boiling. Just pour or soak the parts, once disassembled - the cosmoline melts right off. Then go over with carb cleaner to get the rest of it off. The cosmoline will soak into the wood of the stock as well - just put it in the car in the hot sun and the cosmo will melt off. Or - if your wife is forgiving like mine, put it in the oven at about 150 degrees for awhile - the cosmo will literally ooze out of it.

I think as long as you limited your shots to the distance you were comfortable with (and the rifle was capable of) they would make an okay deer gun in states where legal. (Here in Ohio hunting deer with a rifle is illegal period... regardless of action or capacity.) My Norinco holds an honest 2" at 50 yards from sitting position. Have not bench rested it but I would assume it could do better than that. I have seen other SKS rifles that grouped in excess of 8" at 100 yards from a bench.

You can also find 30 round detachable 'duck-bill' magazines for the SKS. Just remove the fixed magazine (which requires popping out the trigger assembly) and the 30 rounder should clip in there. Depending on the rifle, they may not fit exactly. I personally do not like them.

One thing fairly critical - make sure you get the firing pin/bolt clean. The firing pins are usually pretty tight and if its gunked with cosmoline - you always run the risk of a slamfire - even just dropping the bolt on a live round. I've never seen it happen but have heard of SKS's going 'full auto' when the firing pin gets stuck.

    7.62x39 Availability

I haven't seen a lot of 7.62x39 surplus around lately - still not sure why. Those that have it are charging too much for it.

Could it possibly be getting snatched up for Iraq?

We carted several thousand AKs and literally millions of rounds of 7.72x39 ball still in spam cans from old Iraqi army depots out into the desert for "disposal" by EOD. This typically involved copious amounts of C4. Broke my heart, especially the AKs. Wish I could have collected one of each type...

The problem over there is too much ammo floating around...

Why not use the AKs to make sure that each US soldier/marine/airman, etc all have a personal weapon?

The only way to get one home is as a unit "trophy." It has to be de-milled and documented, and the unit can have it as a wall hanger. Individuals are not allowed to take trophies home, unfortunately.

for good books on the SKS, I searched Amazon.com. I found two, the offficial SKS manual and the SKS carbine. Both excellent books on not only how to strip and clean, but how to fix if some simple things break.

    Good for a SHTF situtation.
