I buy spare mags whenever I find a good pirce, or even if I just stop by the gun shop (I always make a point of spending about $20-30 per visit. It lets me fondle all the firearms I want, and sets a good standard for haggling when I buy a gun--the owner knows I spend money in his shop). I really couldn't give an accurate count of how many mags I have. I can guarantee that I have at least 2 per; up to 20, 30+ when it comes to AR's and G3 mags. heck, I was cleaning out the closet the other day and found a bag, I think from a gunshow last year, that had 3 Glock 17 mags. Completely forgot about 'em.

    Really--you can't have too many.

-Kimber Ultra CDP II: 4 KimPro 7rd mags/1 Kimber stock 7rd mag
    -Kahr PM9: 4 6rd mags w/Pearce extensions, 6 7rd mags and 1 8rd mag (FS BTW)
-Glock G29: 6 10rd mags (and I don't even have a G29 yet). I thought I better grab them back when prices were around $13-$15ish.

I just snag them all up whenever a good deal presents itself.

There is a trend developing here as I am becoming a magoholic.

To quote my Team Sgt in Vietnam when I asked the same question:

"When your laying in the grass, don't ask me for ammo".

    I hope you GET it.

Just wondering how many is excessive

I carry no more than two for my Glock 33 (9 rounds ea.)
I think if you need more than that you will allready dead .
the most time you will have stop someone from killing
you will be less than 5 seconds
I mean, if you can not stop someone that fast its over

I always make it a personal goal to obtain minimum of 6 for each gun. This includes all long guns and is particularly important for large capacity guns. Those that may become restricted in the future. And also this sort of takes you into a sub collection sometimes with certain Magazine types. The primary reason I do this is to have parts. This makes me fairly confident I can cobble together a couple of working magazines at any time in the future. So I tend to immediately obtain two or three brand new good quality ones, immediately after obtaining that gun. Then I search for bargains or Collectibles to complete the rest. Always using minimum of 6 but also using a ultimate goal of 10-12 to include some collectibles if that is applicable to the situation.

Pistols: around 10 or so G17 mags and about 6 G19 mags (the 17 mags will also work in the 19).

Rifle: about 25 of the 30-round mags for my AK

If you carry in Condition 3, you have two empty chambers. One in the weapon...the other between your ears.

always take 5 10-round mags for each pistol to range = box at a time when loading mags (my brain tells me this makes sense - not sure though) also bring along hi-caps as well - note: live in Peoples Republic of California and so I can't get new hi-caps - my favorite pistol is Glock 30 so not affected there, but for my G19's and others I have a limited number of "pre-ban" ones avail to me - recondition them regularly and they should last me 3 lifetimes anyway

I try to have 10 minimum for each of mine..... I hate only having a cpl of mags and reloading at the range.

    My rule of thumb is:

10 magazines for any handgun I am likely to want to carry
4 magazines for any handguns that are just toys
10 magazines for any rifle I am likely to want to carry
4 magazines for any rifles that are just toys

This is a minimum of course :-)

    It depends on the gun.

At the minimum I have four magazines per gun and carry one in the gun and one reload. I change my magazines every six months, rotating them to give them a break.
