    Thoughts on This Rifle Deal

I am in the market for a hunting rifle, am really looking for a Browning X-Bolt in .308 but they do cost about $800 & this is my first rifle. I noticed a Savage 11G chambered for .308 in the used section of my local big-box store this weekend. It had some "love marks" on the stock for sure but it was under $250 and I have heard nothing but good things about that rifle. Good deal?

The Savage website says that the 11G has "open sights and a short action" when noting what makes it unique from the other 110 models. Any idea what "open sights" is referring to? Don't all rifles come with front & rear sights?

No, some rifles come with no sights at all. I guess no sights makes it almost imperative that a scope be mounted. That said, if the Savage is in good shape, that's not a bad price and Savage makes a fine rifle.

I bought an 11G new a few years ago as a hunting rifle. It came with both front and rear sights. The $250.00 is about half of what I paid for a new one.

As best I can tell, the damage/wear is all cosmetic, which is fine with me. I am not picky & am comfortable having a worn firearm. I can't imagine that a reputable big-box store would sell a rifle that did not function properly.

In addition to the pm I sent. Have the seller remove the bolt. You can then look down the barrel from the rear of the gun. If the barrel (bore) looks shiny and smooth buy it.

.308 is a great round. I own a LOS-7-1 in .308. I love it, and it is very versatile.

Sounds like a good deal but you'll need to make sure it will chamber and extract with little effort, and do look down the barrel preferably with a light. For the price, I'd just think of the stock as gone anyway and replace it with a quality synthetic from Bell and Carlson.
