    Off the wall question

I know this is going to be an off the wall question, but here goes.

Does anyone know the best way to retract the tension spring on a 1932 Rossi .410? I broke one down, handed down by Grandfather, to clean and touch up as it is showing its age with minor rust and the bluing coming off. When I broke it down I also took out the hammer so I could remove the firing pin and clean out the area for it, since it was not engaging when dry fired.

Now I can't get the freaking hammer back in place because I can't bring the pin/spring that provides the tension back enough to get the hammer back in place.

I have tried a flat head screwdriver to pull the spring back, I have tried wax coated string and it is not strong enough to pull it before snapping. I have tried cussing and that does absolutely nothing!

    Help if you can.

Take it to a gun smith. let them be responsable for any mishaps

I've never used a gunsmith, but in your case I would. While you are there, get a trigger job or new sights on another gun just for fun. I'm always looking for an excuse to upgrade

I ran into a similar problem with the headlight retaining spring on a 1971 Ford LTD, I used heavy wire to make a hook with a straight bend and a loop to put a dowel through. Place the hook through the loop of the spring and then pull it back enough to hook over the pin, once the loop is over the pin you will want to angle the hook slightly back and slip it out of the spring loop.

    Pictures?

Had a similar problem on a H&R single shot 410 that I fixed for a buddy.

If I can see some pictures I may be able to help.
