You need to record all the data on your firearms. If they are stolen, you need to provide all the information available to the police.

Additionally, you need to keep a hardcopy of that data in case the thieves take your computer.

yes I do, both in electronic form on my local file-server, which is mirrored to a remote web-server, and physically via keeping their reciepts in a packet in my safe. If the worst happens, I want to have that data.

Is this hard to understand? Then why does it get unintelligible to some people when 5 little words are changed?

I certainly keep records. I keep the hard and pdf copies of the receipts as well as photos that show the guns. I've also got the electronic copies on my work server (which is backed up in two remote locations).

If anything ever happens to any of my guns I want to be able to help the police any way I can.

Yep. Not just guns either. It's a good idea to keep a list of the serial numbers of anything of value, along with photos or video. In the event of a loss, it'll help support your insurance claim and could aid in recovery.

I keep the list on my laptop and a hard copy in my safe.

Yes, I keep a record in case they are stolen. You don't want the police coming to you after they were used in a crime.
