What common carrier do you use?

I would like to know what shipper, ie UPS or FedEx do most of you out there use to ship a gun you have sold? I shipped a pistol that I sold today via UPS and they hosed me to the tune of $78! They insisted it had to go Next Day Air. I was under the impression that I could ship it Ground for around $20-$25.

I use UPS most of the time. USPS is a good alternative. I've only shipped a complete firearm once though (shotgun), and upper receivers separate.

I have always been told that unless you have a FFL, you must ship the firearm overnight or next day air because of ATF regulations. That is what the guy who I have guns shipped to told me so I am not sure how accurate it is.

That sounds like something UPS or Fedex may force on you, rather than the law. There is a requirement that shipping out of state requires you to mail to an FFL.

Oh ok wasn't sure how valid the information was. He was telling me that this is how some of the bigger name shipping companies require you to ship firearms. He said it had something to do with the firearms sitting in their warehouse for extended periods of time and turning up missing.

It is my understanding that you can ship UPS or FedX overnight shipping only. But shipping a gun by USPS is a big NO NO !

Here is the UPS statement about firearms shipping: UPS: Shipping Firearms

This is the FedEx statement: Freight Terms and Conditions - General Terms and Conditions at FedEx.com

Only a licensed dealer, manufacturer, etc can use USPS.

Incorrect. That rule only applies to handguns. Rifles can be shipped by USPS, UPS Ground, Fedex Ground, etc.
