outdoor range
I am in the process of building an outdoor range on my 20 acres. i want to have a few lanes at 300 yards for rifle and another few lanes at 50 yards or even closer for pistol. has anyone else built a backstop on there land... I plan on surrounding the whole thing with a fence and signs warning trespassers that they have entered a live fire gun range i have begun collecting dirt from anywhere i can get it for free or cheap. is there anything i am forgetting? There are no local laws on requirements for backstops so i do not have to worry about that.

What is behind your property?

I guess the type of backstop depends in part on what is behind your property. You need a fairly high mound, and even with one, it would be important to make sure there is clear uninhabited and unused property behind the range. Remember, even the lowly 22 lr will travel a mile.

I dug a 60X50X12 deep pond and used the dirt to build a backstop at the tree line in the back of my hay field, the U shaped berm ended up being 15'H 35' l N 20' d n I can drive right up to it or back off to the pole barn at 400 yards, the best part is that as you back off you go up hill so you are always shooting down into it. I had to hand pick out all the rocks though, N planted grasses all over it to stabilize the ground.
