Arrow 1948 Ammunition is not fun!

So I bought some really cheap (old) Bulgarian Heavy Ball 7.62x54R ammo for plinking and decided to give it a shot. $39.99 for 250 rounds is a bargain and the last batch i bought was great (1955)...

Anyways... the result was 2 in 5 basically blew up

    yeaw...

Still goes through steel like hot butter, but superheated gas in the face is not fun.

Yep, thats pretty common with old military stuff.

I had some 8MM do the same thing. Shot OK but more than half of the brass was trashed out. Since it was Berdan primed though, it was no great loss.

As long as it didn't damage your firearm...lesson learned.

I've had similar issues with old 8mm, but they were splitting at the neck only and I wasn't getting hot gas in my face.

You just might want to get that chamber checked for size. Most rifle brass will split at the neck before cracking in the body. Not to say that stuff 60 years old isnt pushing it a bit, but get the chamber checked anyway.

Recently I shot some old 30-06 in my Garand and the cases split the same way. Smoky stuff and was glad I had on glasses, though I wasn't injured

I had some old European 9mm sub gun ammo that a friend gave me that was having similar issues when shooting it in my Cobray M11. Took all the remaining rounds and tore them down and saved the bullets and threw the rest of the junk away. Not worth ruining a gun or worse yet getting yourself or someone else hurt with junk ammo.

I think the cases get brittle over time and instead of expanding they crack
