Help ID this Win 30-30 please

Just un-shelved this beauty while cleaning out some storage space.

As far as I know, this rifle belonged to my great grandfather. My Dad gave it to me years ago. He told me nothing had been done to it since he acquired it in the 60s.
I was wondering if anyone here could help me identify when it was made and maybe it's approximate value, although I doubt I'd ever sell it.

It seems to be in excellent shape, has been kept well-oiled, in a case, in a reasonably dry spot. The stock shows some scratches but the finish looks perfect. Last time I shot the gun (several years ago) it cycled fine and grouped well for my mediocre iron-sight shooting.

The serial number is 11083xx.

According to this page it was made in 1940.

Anyone have any more info, ideas on where I could look, or an estimate on value?

Blue book of gun values. Look in the library. My public library in OKC where I used to be stationed had about 6 books on gun values. I would look for you, but at my current location :tumbleweed: that is kind of difficult!

Sweet gun. I love those old guns. My wife had her grandfather's .22, a Mossberg model 44C I think from the '40s. Great shooter. I've got a French 8mm Lebel rifle from the '30s and a 1923 Argentine Mauser. The Lebel shoots decently, unfortunately the Mauser isn't very accurate, but it is in the original Argentine caliber.

A standard Winchester Model 94 .30-30.

The value would be whatever someone would pay. They are very common guns, and although the pre-64 guns will bring more, its not that much more.

I own a couple of that generation 94s. It has a curved metal butt plate instead of the later ones that had a straight metal one. It also is a top eject, instead of the later angle eject.

Hang on to it....it has more family value than dollar value!

I love the lever gun. It is a truly American rifle. On the farm a 94 is my constant companion.

Cabelas has one similar to yours, condition an all for $800. So yours would be around that value. Hold onto it , the value will just go up.

Especially since the Model 94 is no longer in production.

Keep it and pass it on to your children.

I have a few, most in 30-30 but one in .32 Win Spec. (my favorite). Great guns to shoot . Here in Mich. it is the first gun alot of boys hunt deer with and do so all thier lives. I have many fond memories that include carrying that rifle in the woods. I also keep a few as insurance should the SHTF. You could, if needed, get 30-30 ammo from any cabin in the woods here in Michigan. Keep that rifle you'll be glad you did when you teach a boy in your family to shoot it, and by all means shoot it, that's what it's for.

I don't think I'd ever sell it anyway, being a family heirloom.

Now that I know it's not a super-valuable antique, I'll probably shoot it more often.

Does anyone have any input on rather or not to have it tapped for a scope mount? Good idea, bad idea?

Bad idea! Leave it as is! If you want a scoped 30-30, pick up a Marlin.

Agree! With the top eject, the scope has to be side-mounted which is a cruddy way to mount a scope to begin with. More importantly, it's just wrong on a classic lever gun like that! :hand5:

My father loaned his 30-30 to my cousin. :comeandgetsome: I finally had to go get it and he had mounted a scope on it. :aargh4: I almost used it on him.:twak:
It is a sin to put a scope on a Winchester 94.:nono:

I have a Model 94 chambered in 32 WinSPL and way back in the early 90's took it to a gunsmith to inquire about having a scope added.

Not only did the gunsmith say that he prefered NOT to do it because it would lower the value of the gun, he offered me $600 for it on the spot.

I decided to keep it.

Marlin 336 are cheap, some are already tapped for scope. Don't ruin a classic.
If I were to put a scope on a winchester, I would do it to my post "64" model, it is already tapped.
