    Sheppherd Scopes

This is not exactly a "HUNTING" rifle, lol. I have a SA M1A SuperMatch. It's been tuned by ROBAR and I hung a Sheppherd Range Finding scope on it. I only feed it Federal Gold 168gr Match Ammo and that is the ammo the scope was calibrated for by the factory. But I can fire ten rounds at 100 meters and cover all of them with a nickel.

There are small aiming circles aligned down the reticle. They grow smaller as the range increases. There are circles out to 1000 meters. Each circle is supposed to be the appropriate diameter of a deers chest at about 18 inches. The idea is to see which circle is neatly filled by this area of the animal. That's the range and you aim dead on (holdover is automatic).

The neat thing is that the area of a man's chest is also about 18 inches. The scope cost me about $500 in 1999. There are often ads for these in SHOTGUN NEWS.

I have several friends that have and swear by Shepperd scopes. One friend has the varmint model and also loves it. I can't understand why more people that are into them crazy assed MILDOT's don't take a close(closer) look at the Shepperd's. The side ticks can, very easily, and very accurately,be used for rangeing. They are also a very rugged scope. My friend that is a Elk Guide out west has one on a .300 Weatherby Mag. It has ridden miles and miles on horseback. Another great scope is the line produced by Nightforce. These scopes are used by most of the really longe range snipers using the 50's. Even if they have to purchase their own. There are some really great optices out there. I feel that you will get what you pay for.----------
