Another food for thought. The amount of ammo sold is not really an indication of which gun is used the most. I have never had to use more then 2 rounds to kill a deer, and that was only once. A box of 20 for my 30-30 will last for 10 years; one shot to verify it is still zeroed and 1 shot to kill the deer. I don't make it a habit to practice with my hunting ammo. I do my practice shooting with rifles that have cheaper ammo. I have seen people buy a box of ammo and go through it sighting in their rifle. Not me, my 30-30 stays sighted in because I don't take it out and bash it around. If it isn't banged around it should be the same as last time I shot it. I use Iron sights to hunt deer with, A scoped rifle is more likely to be nocked off then Iron sights.
Common? YES! Most common? MAYBE?
Around this part of Missouri, it would be a toss up between the .30-30, 30-06, and a 12 ga. slug. (With a good measure of .270 and .308 mixed in)
Cape Locum Et Fac Vestigium
270 Is way more popular around these parts!! But we seldom have a shot more than 100 yards!!

I figure the 30-06 is probably the most popular nationwide.
I use a 25-06, but not one of my friends have a 30-06. Most use a 30-30, a couple use a marlin 444 and a few still use a 12 gauge and I think one has a 243 wssm.
Current collection: Too many according to the wife...
My vote has to go to the ole reliable 30/30. And I'm willing to
bet with the new LeveRevolution rounds stretchin' it out to 200m+
it'll be around for many, many more huntin' seasons.

I know about as many that use a .270. Pretty close.

I've always felt the 30.06 was once the top dog, but in the last 30 years it slipped. Still one of the top / common rounds, but not the dominance it once had.
30/30 most common hunting round in the states.
30.06 more common (vs 30/30) with scoped hunting rifles. As someone pointed out, might be a few more rounds fired every year because it take a little more effort to keep a scoped rifle on target.
Factors that chipped away at the 30.06
The 30/30 did not so much increase in popularity, but maintained the same level, while the 30.06 dipped a bit.
Newer long distance rounds. Not really better than the 30.06, just something that chipped away at the 30.06.
Reduced number of overall hunters (many were 30.06 users)
.223 out manufactured (total rounds produced per year) the 30.06 in the last 10 to 20 years. This does not take into account reloaders.
Those are my thoughts, but I have no facts to back it up or prove it wrong.

KIlled 1st deer w/30-30 but hunt w/30.06 now,but still voted no 30-30 still best bush gun MHO
I'm betting the 30-30 has taken more deer than the 30-06, but it's gotta be close.

My vote is also with the 30-30. Although in more open areas the 30-06 probably wins over.
