    Silencer?

How do you go about getting the federal license \ stamp to legally purchase \ own a silencer? Any idea how much $$$ it costs?

Is this something your dealer helps you with or go directly to sheriff's dept or what?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. can you leagley own one in your state?
    2. if yes to #1, then look up the dealers in your area that stock NFA weapons. If nobody does, you can check out GA, Auction Arms, Gunbroker. BUT you need a guy in your state that's a NFA or Class3 to accept the gun.. or supressor for you.
3 There is a 200.00 tax stamp imposed on the transfer..
    4. you need to fill out a Form 4 (which your Chef, or local Sherriff MUST sign off that says you're a good boy), along with 2 FBI print cards (prints done and signed by the LEO who took the prints), copy of your current drivers' license, Handgun permit, and two Pasport color photos of yourself (shoulders up to head photo, preferably with tie on)
    5. Reason for issue: "Advanced Weapons Collector"
(this sounds much better than "cuz I want one" )
    6. bring everything back to the Dealer, along with a Certified funds check for 200.00 and the dealer will send everything out.
    7. When you get approved (in about 4-6 months) you can go get your Supressor or NFA weapon, with your paperwork.
Sounds like going thru hell, but it's well worth the trip.

If it's the FFL (Dealers License) then you go directly to the BATF for that.
I'm pretty positve that should you try to get info from the Sherrif/Chief, you'll find they have less info on the whole procedure than yourself

Good grief, glad it's not a time consuming, complicated procedure!

Silencer for one gun: $200 + FFL fees + gas

Cool electronic hearing protection that you can use with all guns: $150 give or take

Been there..........doen it many times............for myself and for customers... depened on how badly ya want one..They are a lotta fun...
No FFL fees if you're buying one from a dealer in your State, as it's usually built into the purchase price
If it's out-of-State.. The dealer could charge ya 50 bucks or a bit more.......

I can own em' here but it is just sooo much paperwork, and the cost.

Reminds me Bob - I never yet heard back about those FA items - sadly. I must ask my son to check with his BIL again.

There is one other complication -- not sure if it applies to the "Hush Puppy" itself, but it sure does if you own a legal full auto select fire weapon: You get to voluntarily sign away your fourth Amendment rights. The BATF has all the rights to come pull an "inspection" of your property to insure it is still in fact in YOUR possession as your property. They will verify by make model and serial number. They will be inside your home with full rights of disclosure. So that means if Mr Fed sees something he deigns worthy of investigation, he can do so and be legal. I'm not sayin' here that I don't trust our bretheren in the Fed LEO ranks...but I sure GOD don't trust their bosses! So as long as they can stroll inside my house any time 24/7/365 forget it.

You're entirly correct on that Ex......I've spoken with many BATF people and they have yet to have done what you're mentioing.. They do respect your private domain...When I got a call.(and I did get 2 of em) they were VERY considerate....The deal was..there was a theft of something similar to what I have, and a possible shooting of same weapon.during the time of theft. .they just wanted to know if my weapons were secured at that time. I allowed them to view what they were looking for, and they were gone... not a peep since.
They were VERY curtious to me, and very understanding of my concerns.

Ive got exactly 200 bucks in mine...not counting the time it took me to build it of course...

If youve got a lathe and the skills they arent that big of a deal to make. I just put "personal collection" on my form 1. When I got the paperwork back,(right at 4 months) I built it and serialized it.

Am trying to whack a deer with it, but so far none have cooperated...

Or you can make any NFA weapon, except for machine guns (see
below), by filing a Form 1, "Application to Make and Register a
Firearm", and paying the $200 making tax, which applies to all of
these weapons, including AOW's. You may not make the proposed
weapon until the Form 1 is returned to you approved. The law
enforcement certification, photos and fingerprints also apply to
Form 1's, and in fact to any transaction to an individual.
Additionally the manufacturer of any NFA weapon, including an
individual making one on a Form 1 must mark the receiver of the
weapon with the maker's name and city and state. NFA Branch can
grant exemptions from this for DD's. All types of corporations,
including corporate type 01 FFL holders, need not do the
certification, photo and fingerprint requirements. Any of the
forms listed, and the fingerprint cards, are available for free
from ATF, either in Washington, D.C. or your local office.

    Yep...form 1

NFA weapons are: machine guns, sound suppressors (a.k.a.
silencers), short barreled shotguns, short barreled rifles,
destructive devices and "any other weapons".

The ATF classes the "silencer" as a weapon.
