    Firearm purchase paperwork retention

I have several pistols, rifles & shotguns purchased so long ago that documentation was limited to a receipt, but who gets copies of paperwork on current purchases? I assume the FFL dealer keeps a set, but does the state and / or federal government receive and retain info on what I plan to buy in the coming weeks?

Obviously, my concern is a knock on the door from folks looking for specific, recently purchased weapons if gun laws are changed in the future.

I remember reading somewhere that records are kept with law enforcement for 30 days...I don't know if thats accurate or not. I do know however that the shop that sells you your weapon keeps the paperwork on it forever.

Dealer keeps the 4473 for 20 years or until business closes at which time they are turned over to the ATF.

If you are talking about the form 4473 that the FFL uses to call NICS then there is only one copy and the FFL retains it. If he goes out of business he is required to surrender all bound/log books, acquisition & disposition books, 4473's, invoices and Brady forms to the National Tracing Center.

State forms if any vary by state.

If current laws change, I'm probably not going to be able to find much info on my firearms...

I wouldn't worry about it. If the establishment wants to turn you into a criminal overnight, they won't need any "paperwork" to do it. Put it out of your mind, sleep well, and enjoy watching the sun come up tomorrow.
