    Carrying a Handgun While Hunting

I was out deer hunting last weekend, with the wind blowing and not having the best access to sports for this situation. This gave me a lot of time to think.

Would it be best for me to carry a hand gun while hunting. I am already armed with a 30-06, why would I need a hand gun.

Access to something quick for when my hands are otherwise occupied? Like when field dressing a dear or climbing down the tree.

Access to a gun when I have my deer rifle unload or nothing in chamber?

Keep my handgun with me instead of locked, hidden in the car?

    Other?

    What do you think?

Coup de grace. Not as messy as the 06. Pistols have less of a tendency to blow brain matter all over your legs and feet.

    Sure, why not?

Easier to shoot sitting down when you are attending to "business".

Easier to shoot when Mongobuck comes walking up directly behind your stand, and the angle is too much for your rifle.

    What do you think?
I think you ought to carry it.

Generally speaking, I'm usually well-armed enough while out-n-about in the woods hunting with just my long gun. IF I carried a "back-up" with me it'd be because I'm a-hunting critters bigger n' meaner than me......I might need it!

Also be VERY careful of your states hunting/firearm laws. more than one firearm while hunting may be a bad thing.

I always carry a 4" .357 revolver with me when hunting. Pay attention to your local hunting ordanices.

I only carry a handgun hunting when down in the southern part of my state. This is primarily for 2 legged possible problems and not for the 4 legged ones. Mostly concerned about the illegal traffic that I have seen increase over the last 5 years.

+1 for a sidearm to dispatch wounded animals. That is if its legal where you are at.

I carry my 22 mag SA revolver most of the time when hunting. When bird hunting with my dog I got snake shot loaded in the first 2 rounds then HP's after that. Sometimes I carry my xd-45c just cause I like to carry it.

Yup. Always keep a loaded .45 on my side when hunting. Never had a reason not to.

Yes, I carry a S&W .44 magnum. I grouse hunt in bear country so I am only otherwise armed with a .20 GA. shotgun.

i always carry my .45. hogs are mean and bolt action can be slower than i want. also nice when i leave the rifle on a trail to track a deer so im not unarmed for critters of all types.

I live in Alaska and carry my Blackhawk 45 Colt with 395 grain hardcast handloads while hunting, and hiking for that matter. Lots of willows and alders to get through to get anywhere and bears can be surprisingly stealthy. A pistol is much quicker to bring into action than the rifle.
