Is it even possible to do a private sale? Or is it better to just take it into a store? My husband has given me the go ahead to trade/sell our Ruger, so I can get a Glock 30 and/or something else. Thanks!

Absolutely. If your Ruger is a pistol, you must still receive either a pistol purchaser permit from the buyer, or see their North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit.
(all transfers - sales, gifts, inheritance, EVERYTHING - of ownership of a handgun in NC MUST include a pistol purchase permit or the receiver must hold an NC CHP)
You'll probably get a better deal if you do a trade-in.

I think I will just look to trade in. Thanks for the help! I am going to go rent a few to try out and then trade it in on my choice.
