    FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) ―

Crews say a wildfire near Fort Collins has burned more than 90 acres. Investigators determined late Tuesday that the fire was caused by bullet fragments.

The Paradise fire broke out on Monday 15 miles west of Fort Collins.

About 100 firefighters are battling the flames. They said they have it more than 50 percent contained.

Crews say the change in the acreage is based on better mapping rather than actual fire growth on Tuesday. Initially the fire was estimated at about 50 acres in size.

Forest service officials said they want to know if anyone has "any information about any shooting activity taking place in the area" of the wildfire. They asked people with information to call (970) 498-2709.

No homes were threatened by the blaze and there were no evacuations.

    The cause was under investigation.

I don't know, but this sounds fishy to me. I've seen countless ranges fired in the army, and the only thing that I ever saw cause a range fire were tracers. Fragments? That makes it sound like they are blaming FMJ chunks for it.

Same here, the only fire that I have seen from a firearm is after about 50 rounds out of an M60 being fired prone in a bunch of really dry grass.

I have not bothered to check, but I think the brass is hotter than the bullet, and neither hot enough to ignite grass or pine needles.

Had to be tracers if they seriously found the source as the bullet.

Sounds like pure speculation to me.

Even if it were tracers how could they prove it? Did they have a burned bullet?

I'd be intrested to know if it was lack of other reasons that led them to this conclusion? I found a cartridge case so it must have been a spark from the bullet?

Me thinks that the on;y way it's 'bullet related' is if the shooter dropped a lit cigarette!

Interesting thing is that the articles title is the only place where bullet fragments are mentioned. The article itself said that the cause is under investigation.

Well my daughter saw that and a few other claims like that in her fire/arson class at Eastern Ky University. Unless it is a tracer round its not gonna happen cause a bullet or brass isnt gonna hit the needed temps. According to her thats around 800 plus degrees.
She said its incrediblely hard to start any fire naturally. Mother nature just doesnt want to burn on its own. let alone start one with a chunk of lead or brass thats exposed to high temps briefly.
Current collection: Too many according to the wife...
