Like almost everyone else, Daisy Red Ryder was my thought as I read your post. Go for it!

Well, I'm late to this post, but IMO the Red Ryder is going to be too heavy for your 4 yr old.
A better choice is the Daisy Buck. They sell for around $20 at Wal-Mart.

Daisy Shopping Cart - Model 105 Buck

I bought a Buck for my daughter at 5 and it took some work for her to handle it then. She just turned 8 and is now about where she can handle the weight of the Red Ryder. Here is a pic of her with the Buck when she was 6, the day she got her first bullseye.

You could get both and save the Red Ryder for a couple of years down the road. Or you could just give him the Red Ryder and let him shoot from a bench or rest of some sort.
When you've got 'em by the balls, their hearts & minds will follow. Semper Fi.

Daisy Red Ryder, have to make that first one a gun he can hand down to his son when the time comes.

IMHO a real BB gun is a little much at that age. I just taught a 4 year old to shoot a nerf brand toy that shoots foam darts. His muzzle control was awful! If he had a red Ryder I'd be short an eye or two.

I think as long as you are supervising, the Red Rider is the perfect choice. I started my son and daughter both with airsoft guns when they were 3. When my son turned 4, I bought him a Rossi .22/.410 combo and he did just fine. When he was 7, I got him a youth model Ruger .308. Took him out and let him shoot it and he shot just fine.

B.T.W. retsupt, I just played that game and scored 6,739,132 points.

I was very young also and I started with the daisy buck like sgtD's daughter. Loved it. Gave it to a family friend bout 8 years ago for his boys, now im trying to get it back for when I have kids.
