Buying ammo... not asked for ID

On the way to the range the other day my fiance and I stopped to pick up some ammo, at a store that we rarely go to. The person behind the counter was talking on his cell and there was a police officer browsing. We walked up to the counter to pay, and barely looking at us the clerk rang us up and took our money. We left, amazed that we were not asked to show proof of license to carry or FID card...

Do they not have to ask for id? We live in MA... just wondering if this is normal.

    Thanks
    ~Krockett

I buy WWB at Wally World and only until recently the clerk at the one store where Im at often asked me for ID. She she was trying to make a habit of asking everyone now. Maybe its a store policy. However, the last few times I went in she didnt ask me for ID. Maybe she knows me well enough to know?

At the other Wally World, they have never asked me for ID.

Weed dont need ID in Arkansas to buy ammo. We dont have a Firearms Owners I.D.

For us no ID is normal. If I had been asked for an ID just to buy ammo, I would have left it on the counter and walked off.

I watched the WM sporting goods clerk ask a kid for ID yesterday for buying shotgun shells and some 22lr. I'm sure it was just to determine age. I never get ID'd for buying ammo.....just cigarettes.

No requirement here in VA to show ID when purchasing ammo. Not being from MA, I don't know the answer on your state laws. Even if it is required, you did not break the law, the clerk did.

Not normal, required to produce proper ID to buy ammo in Mass.

Unless I'm buying a gun I don't get asked for ID at stores anymore... too much grey hair I suppose. From my experience unless it's a state requirement - states that require a firearms owner ID card for example - the only time any store normally does an ID check is to verify age.

Truth is, I've been at Wal-Mart many times and watched a clerk ask other customers (obviously not middle aged yet or older) for an ID who were buying things as varied as ammo, tobacco and/or alcohol products and spray paint.

I've been carded for handgun ammo, but I'm 23, so they probably can't make an obvious assumption that I'm at least 21.

In AL, you have to be 18 to purchase ammo, so I have not been carded in over a decade.

I've purchased ammo in Oregon and Washington, no ID required (I asked).

Back home, ID (Federally issued Possesion and Acquisition License) MUST be shown. The info is not recorded though, so it's not an issue for me.

Never have been asked to see ID for the purchase of ammo until lat week was at Sports Authority they asked to see Id. I have been asked to see Id when looking to purchase a used handgun. Wouldn't remove it from under the glass until they looked at Id.

I believe that in Ma you need an FID card to purchase ammo, so I would think they would check for it. The other shop that we go to always does, and the walmart checks for id and a license to carry... just seemed odd not to have them ask. I guess I will have to look into the laws on it.

Bought ammo in many states over the years without being "carded".

Only been ID'd in Illinois and that was about twenty five years ago, hate to think what it would be now.
