My father in law gave us an old Smith & Wesson Model 12-3 that had been sitting in his closet for years. It doesn't look like it's been shot at all. I'll probably take it to the range this week and test it out

Nice gift. IIRC the Model 12 was a lightweight frame (aluminum) so I would not use +P until I got more definitive info.

First time I've ever seen a 4" 12. My 12 and every other one I've seen has been a 2".
The frame is slimmer on the 12 compared to other K frames, so don't automatically expect aftermarket grips will fit properly. I found that out the hard way.
