can't really go wrong with any of those. if your range allows you to rent guns, i would suggest renting the models that you're interested in if available before buying. this will help you decide.

If its just for range gun then stick with 9mm, its cheap and still puts holes in paper just as well as .40, .45 just a tad smaller :)

In saying that any of the following would be a fine range gun

    Glock 17
    M&P9
    XD9
    Taurus PT99
    Pretty much any 1911

Ive got 2 of the above list and if I had to choose a 3rd gun it would an M&P9 over a Glock17.

The M&P9 is getting rave reviews, its just a nice dam gun.

    redrick,
If I remember correctly your in the Richmond area. I know for a fact Dominion Shooting Range has a CZ75 P-01 you can rent. I'd highly recommend you give it a try.

I'm in the same boat and am basically just looking for a deal. Ones that I'm considering are a CZ 75B or SP-01 and Glock 17, 19 or even 26. I'm sure a Sig 226, 229, Browning HP or Beretta 92FS would work also. Oh, what about a nice 9mm 1911? Confused yet? Me too. Again, it will probably come down to the deal and an impulse buy for me.

I just bought a new CZ 85B about a week ago. This is the first CZ i've ever owned or shot. I went by a gun shop a buddy of mine has, just to say hello, honest, and he handed me the CZ, he'd just got it in and asked me what I thought of it. To make a short story shorted, I left with it 15 minutes later. I've run around 150 rounds through it so far with out a hiccup. I know everyones different, that's why they make so many different ones, but this one fits my hand better than any other pistol I've shot and I really like the trigger DA is very good, but the SA is great!

I'll throw in a suggestion for a SIG P226 Stainless Elite. I have the previous P226 ST model, and the weight makes it like shooting a .22. You can get 18 or 20 round magazines assuming they are legal in your state.

I had always thought about a Glock 34, though now you may want to look at the S&W M&P longslide series too.

Friend of mine just bought a CZ 85 Combat and he just loves it. If it were me buying a range gun, I'd go for the SA XDM.

Would recommend a 3rd Gen Smith, such as a 5906. Often overlooked, as you can see no one mentioned them yet, but great guns. Plus there is a glutton of them on the market now, and you can get one in good shape for a decent price.
