10 years ago I became a Kimber Master Dealer and have an Ultra CDP always. It's lightweight, compact, effective, accurate, safe, and reliable. I just put Kimber simulated rosewood laser grips on it for fun with the 22lr conversion kit. What's not to like? What could be better?

Do I trust the 1911 for carry purposes? Depending on the 1911, yes. However, while I have 1911s suitable for carry, I find other platforms work better for carry, like the M&Ps and Kahrs.
I wanna hear from the 10 folks who said they don't trust 'em.
1911s are combat handguns made for exactly why we carry! :yup:

One big thing about most of the 1911's produced today is that the machining tolerances these days can produce a very tight fit. This was not a part of John Browning's design. It can sometimes create some issues early in the gun's life. But people now a days seem to equate quality with tighness. And so the Manufacturers give it to them.
Another issue is many new comers to 1911's don't understand how to set the tension on the extractor. A must learn for anyone using one of these and very simple to do. Makes all the difference.
Also remember that practically all Semi Auto handguns today have some aspect of 1911 in them. Almost all of the guns we carry are 1911's at heart.
Now about somewhere in between those two extremes? Well, not so much as in between, but allowing for a third set of circumstances. I don't currently carry a 1911 very often, but I trust a 1911 just fine.
I carried 1911 pistols virtually all the time from 1997 to 2002, and going back to 1983, carried 1911s off and on up to 1997. Since, 2002, it has been occasional. Once I retire from peace officerin', I just may go back to the 1911 as a main carry piece.

I love the 1911A1, great pistol and I have carried it for self defense. I would not pick up a "strange" 1911A1 untested and expect it to save my life. I go through a little superstitious ritual at the range with practice and at home with cleaning before I carry my 1911A1. I don't like other people fiddling with my carry guns.
I trust no strange pistol. If I had to pick a gun off a table that wasn't mine to carry for self defense, I would probably select in the following order:
A. Revolver
B. One of those plastic guns and a model that I know how to use
C. 1911A1 stock GI model, but maybe with the beavertail and aftermarket sights and hopefully without lawyered up parts like built in gun locks and fancy firing pin blocks.
