    Shot while at the range?

Has anyone ever heard of someone being shot either on purpose or by accedent while at the range?
The reason I ask, is that I see some very scary gun handling at the range. I had to leave one day because one shooter was fanning the other shooting stalls while looking at a friends new gun. Neither the friend nor the offender checked to see if the weapon was clear.

I've also seen some scary handling.

I know of 2 people that have been shot at the range in my hometown. One was a woman shooting, and somehow she couldn't control the recoil, kept firing and shot behind her, and shot a guy.

The other one was a boyfriend who on purpose killed his girlfriend there.

wow...that's just plain sick! i've only heard of people shooting themselves accidentally. a woman at a range i used to go to in PHX once had a hot shell fall down her shirt and accidentally shot herself in the leg dancing around trying to get it out.

Make it 5 for that range...this is the same range...
He strolled in, rented gun in hand, took his position at a firing range, then began shooting. He loaded and unloaded. After firing dozens of rounds, the 27-year-old xxxxx man fired a shot that hit his head and left him clinging to life....
In April, xxxxx, 24, was fatally wounded at the gun range, at xxxxx, after a xxxxx woman lost control of the gun she was firing. The .44-caliber revolver recoiled, and the next round struck xxxxx, who was standing behind her.
xxxxx -- A woman rented a handgun at a gun range, exchanged it for a smaller weapon, then used it to shoot herself in the head -- the second fatal shooting at xxxxx in six days.
On the evening of Dec. 1, 2000, Frey walked into xxxxx in xxxxx and rented a 9 mm handgun. He shot a box of bullets at a target, then walked into the men's bathroom and shot himself in the heart.
xxxxx -- After two suicides in five days this month, xxxxx will no longer rent guns to lone target shooters.

A few weeks ago at the range I knew it would happen before it did. A 45acp shell ejected hit the top of the stall and landed right down my shirt. I promptly set the pistol down *pointing down range* and removed said shell from my shirt. Im not the most experienced shooter but I know its better to have a burned back then a possible bullet wound.

I have never witnessed anyone shot at the range but, the range we got to did have a suicide a year or two ago. A guy rented a G26 and then went out on the range. Loaded one round into the gun and shot himself in the head. He dies there on the range. Very sad but haw can you keep that from happening?

At the range I mainly go to...they are pretty diligent. The owner's son was almost shot by a customer. Pointed the gun sideways to look at it and it went off....missed him by a few inches. I try to go during the week when it is slow.

At the range I use to be a member of, and less than a mile from work, a lady went in, bought a new gun and some shells, went into the parking lot and shot herself in the head. That was back in Dec.

Unfortunately for someone who wants to commit suicide a gun is a pretty sure thing for getting the job done. If they have a history of mental illness and can't legally buy a gun or if they just don't own one they can go and rent one at the local range.

With ranges getting busier, and more first timers using them, accidents will happen in particular if the range owner isn't careful. However, there is not much an owner can do to prevent suicides. Maybe point to a better suicide methods? Guns are actually not all that reliable when it comes to suicide and frequently leave the victim maimed or cause collateral damage (think crowded range and over penetration of regular FMJ range ammo).

    Shootings

We have had a couple of incidents at the range where I work. One former employee shot another through the chest with a 9mm FMJ while "clearing a malfunction". He survived the wound, neither still work there and this happened many years before I started. Recently we had a suicide. Person rented a pistol and shot a full box of ammo, bought a second box, moved to the end stall (safe backstop)and killed himself. His friends reported after the fact that he was suicidal. The only other significant injury was a blast injury to a thumb from a revolver shooter. Needed a few stitches there. I've lost track of the amount of people cut by crossing their thumb over the back of their shooting hand when shooting an auto. We get the occasional brass to the forehead cut or cleavage burn. One guy with flip flops did a pretty good dance with a .40 brass on his foot.

We give one warning for unsafe handling and then kick them out. not worth it to the business.

i live in wichita kansas, we have two indoor ranges in town. the one near me has had a couple people come in rent guns and kill themselves. then we also have the guys blast the lights out of the ceiling, and tear the place up, plus lots of unsafe gun handling. the range does not police the place. just lets it go wild. for 20 years the place i work at had an outdoor gun range and we could go shoot all alone. they have just taken that away. the public thing is kinda scary.

Yes, it happens with greater regularity than it should. That, and being a trigger twitch away from being shot today, is why finishing my personal trauma kit just moved up in priority.
