There was a thread about BBQ guns a couple weeks ago and I had no idea this is the best explaination I found.

Your BBQ gun is the nice shiny piece you wear when your needing to look all civilized, and such, as opposed to the gun you wear daily.
Some LEOs might also call it your 'Court Gun'.

BBQ Gun = Barbecue Gun
Basically a fine looking gun to ride on your hip in plain view during a social event (such as a barbecue). Take a look at LawDog's article on Court Guns and BBQ guns.

Most BBQ guns have an accompanying holster and gun belt usually worn in southern and southwestern states on special occassions where it's legal
