Question my dad gave me a gun he lives in CA I live in WA what do I need to do?

In CA I know transferring guns is a big deal but in WA it is not even required to register what should I do if anything? I just want to make sure I am legit... Thanks for the help.

"Depends". IANAL and only visit the west so I cannot quote laws. I believe the easiest way to play it safe would be for each of you to pick a local gun shop and have them do the transfer for you. They certainly should know the laws and necessary procedures.

Welcome. I am new here too. I usually do not respond to questions when I am not sure of an answer, but this one seems safe enough. ;)

+1 Klaatu There usually is a way to transfer a weapon that is a gift from a family member in a lot of states, but California is the big X factor.

Your suggestion is certainly the safest way to accomplish the transfer that would keep BATFE from grumbling and growling.

I agree doing a FFL transfer would be the easiest and safest way to transfer the gun ,unless you plan on having him visit, then he can just deliver the gun to you with no paperwork

This is true only for a long gun. If it is a hand gun you must use FFL and transfer it, because it's go to a different state.

This is correct. Anytime a handgun changes states it is SUPPOSED to be registered in that state by dealer. The easiest way to transfer it would be for him to have a local shop ship it to your local shop. Of course they both are probably going to charge a fee.

If your Dad brings it to you, then you can save alittle and use the same one in WA.

thanks for the input I should be more clear I have the gun in my possession as when I moved up here I brought it with me... I will file the paperwork for the transfer then and not worry about it as suggested.

If it was given to you before you moved don't worry about it, your in the clear. Nothing needs to be done, unless WA requires you to register it.

yeah it was actually given to me many years ago its just been in the safe, now that I am going to CC I planned to pull it out and go do some target shooting and get back into the groove. Washington does not require that you register, I was just worried about him on his side in CA.

Nope you don't have to do anything. I got a gun from my Dad and also moved out of Cali, but to Idaho and I didn't have to do a thing.

Changes States vs. changes owners who live in different States??

    Citation please.

As far as I know the lawful owner can bring any gun they want into Virginia when they move. No registered in Virginia needed.

Unless he reports it stolen, leave well enough alone! Nobody has any idea where that gun is.
