What & Why?
As with everything in life, there is a learning curve, a progression, and as obvious as that seems in retrospect, it's never that clear in the present. I think I need to patent that line, how insightful.
I thought it might be cool to start a thread that explained the categories (ie purpose) of guns you have &why, a categorical list of what item and it's need/purpose.
Example
Home Defense Shotgun - Mossbeg 500
Home Defense Pistol - Kahr K40
Carry Pistol - Kahr PM9, LWS32, Glock 30
Target/Plinking Fun - Ruger target rifle
etc, etc, etc,
Obvioulsy, since it's your collection all reasons/categories are valid but I think it might help others and myself to re-evaluate what's in their collection and why. Recently, it started to become clear to me that the items in my collection needed to have a purpose to justify their existence. As I gained more knowledge and insight, I started to re-evalaute what I have & Why. Hindsight is sooo 20/20, ins'nt it?? I realized that in many ways I was contradicting myself and that forced me down a path where I had to think of things differently. The best way I can describe it is - I categorized their purposes. This process helped me identify areas that I have overlap and also other areas that I am lacking.
Example - I had a few pistols for carry but no HD weapon, ie shotgun/rifle/pistol. why is it that I just perceived the threat to appear while I was out and about? In the spirit of preparedness, why would'nt I be prepared while at home as well and is what I carry what I would want to defend my home with??
I thought it would be coole to creat a categorical list of what you have and why. I thought it would be cool to keep a format of category ---> Specific Item(s) like above. let's have at it!!
PS - If this is stupid then please delete, I'm a couple beers deep!

Home Defense shotgun: None at the moment but will soon change to a Benelli Super Nova Tactical
Home Defense pistol: Glock19
Carry: Glock 19 or S&W 642
Target/Plinking gun: Ruger 10/22 and Romanian GP WASR10 AK-47
I have three other handguns that are more safe queens than anything else.
Springfield XD45
Ruger SR9
Glock 26
I do occasionally carry the XD in a Galco Miami Classic shoulder rig when I plan to do alot of driving, and the G26 almost never gets carried surprisingly. The Ruger SR9 I haven't fired it yet to determine whether I can trust my life with it or not.

Many folks these days are now substituting their AR platform rifles as their primary Home Defense firearm rather than opting for the more traditional Shotgun. Just FYI.
My choices are:
Home Defense #1. Ithaca Model 37 Pump in Riot/Police Configuration.
HD Handgun. Colt 1911
Carry. Colt Combat Commander
Favorite Plinker. S&W Model 41 semi-auto .22 Rimfire

O.K. Walther P22 lr For plinking and fun shooting that won't break the piggy bank.
S&W 99c .40 for HD and sometimes for car carry. Reliable, safe, adequate stopping power, compact.
Mustang .380 for carry. Reliable, safe, easy to take down and clean, easy to rapid fire and stay on target, small, can easily pocket carry. We can argue forever if the stopping power is O.K., but better one you carry than the one you leave at home.
No shotgun or rifle. I don't hunt and neither really fills my needs. I'd have a hard time maneuvering in the house with a shotgun, even with an 18 inch barrel, and I'd have to drive a ways to find a place to practice with it. I see a rifle as of limited usefulness within a city, and it has the same maneuvering issues as a shotgun.
