A good .22 rifle would be my choice to introduce someone to shooting, and my recommendation for a 'first gun' purchase. I'd want to be comfortable shooting this before starting with handguns, and _very_ familiar with handguns before starting with the CCW process.
Yeah, I wear a belt with my suspenders :)
Liberty is an inherently offensive lifestyle. Living in a free society guarantees that each one of us will see our most cherished principles and beliefs questioned and in some cases mocked. It's worth it.

Bad assumption. I bought my first gun about 19 months ago, but it was far from the first one I had ever fired. It was the first one I bought due to the simple fact that 20 months ago,my living conditions prohibited me from conveniently storing one. I was in the active duty Army and living on post, so all privately owned weapons had to go in the arms room. That wasn't a viable solution for me and HD on base wasn't a concern, so I was weaponless. As soon as I moved off post and turned 21, I bought a .38 revolver. I chose the revolver because I could afford it and home defense was my main priority, not concealed carry. My second purchase was a pistol for concealed carry, just as soon as I moved back to PA and applied for a permit. Now I've got even numbers of wheelguns and bottomfeeders. It's good to have options.

Went pistol. Seems like it would be the most useful option for SD.

No question about it; pistol for me.
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the weaponry to make the difference.
