    Newbie with questions

    Hey,

So I don't know much about guns... at all. I've only shot a gun once. It was during a safety training session with this former military/blackwater guy and I shot a G17, .22 Handgun, and M16.

So basically, with all of the info. out there on the Internet, where do you guys recommend I search to find out information on guns such as the very basic essentials to learn such as parts, safety, ammunition, type of guns, laws, and so forth? Could you link some good articles?

If someone could also answer me a question as well...

I'm 19 and would like to buy a gun but unfortunately I can't get a concealed license until I'm 21. Is there any type of weapons (rifles, handguns, shotguns, etc.) that I could LEGALLY purchase just for home defense? I live in California with their awesome gun laws ( ) *sarcasm*

Thanks in advance for taking time out to help a total newbie who really really loves guns and the 2nd amendment!

    is your friend.

Seriously, you can find answers to all your questions that way. It will take a lot of time and effort, but you will be rewarded.

Since you're in California, start here:

    California Gun Laws

Another suggestion: Read! Buy and read all the gun magazines & periodicals you can find. Check the big book stores, like Barnes & Noble and Borders. You would do well to read anything by Massad Ayoob.

You can't legally purchase a handgun until you are 21.

We'll try to answer your questions here, but please try to be specific.

And join the National Rifle Association.

I would also recomend the book Effective Hand Gun Defense by Frank James. It goes into detail about caliber and different types of handguns.

Thanks for all of the replies. I managed to find a lot of laws and such using Google last night.

I found out that I can't buy a handgun until I'm 21 but that doesn't exclude me from purchasing a shotgun or rifle.

Anyway, I'll be doing some reading and thanks for the suggestions.

I say start out with a 12 gauge pump shotgun.

Its the best for HD anyway and you can
take it to the range for skeet shooting.

According to what I've read, that seems to be the best option. I have to go and look for some prices now. :)

I would like to recommend that you find and take a firearms safety course or two. The NRA offers them all over the country. Check with a local area gun club that may be affiliated with the NRA or some state firearm organization. Remember all of us here have been where you are now (just starting to learn) and one day you will be where we are now (able to help someone starting out). Don't be afraid to ask questions. Someone here is always ready to help out. Many of us have been handling firearms for 20 years or more and we can even learn something new.

Highly agree with Black Knight. Research and read up on guns and get to a range or gun club.

As for your other question, you can't beat a shottie for home protection. Don't load it with bird shot though.

Plus, it makes that lovely "clack - CLACK" sound when you load a round, which can make BGs realize that you mean business, and run away...

GETTING A CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT IN CA?

just about impossible isn't it? the lawmakers in Ca are confused about all the laws. it's easier to get spaghetti untangled.

self defence is a God given right. no amount of legislation will ever stop robberies or murder.
