    Competition Shooting on a Budget

I am getting ready to try IDPA here in the Great Nation of Texas and was wondering if using a .22 pistol is a good idea, so that I can save some cash.

I am a full-time student & work two part-time jobs, so money is not exactly an easy thing for me to come by...

No. 9x19 is the minimum for most divisions. Our club does run a .22 match once or twice a year, but it's mainly for kids and spouses.

If you really plan on doing some shooting...better buy some ammo now.
According to my receipts, ammo has almost doubled since Jan 07...and it appears to be continuing the climb.

Buy now or pay twice as much later.

+1 .38 spcl or 9mm Luger are the smallest recognized by IDPA.

My eyes are peeled for value! I have plenty of ammo to last me a while, just want to keep the stash full

The only time I've seen someone shoot IDPA with a .22 was when there was a kid with the Scouts that served as messengers for the state match shoot with us. He wanted to give it a try and we weren't going to tell him no. he had fun and might someday join us as a regular shooter.

    Start reloading. good luck!

I think it's called International Defensive Pistol Association for a reason.

.22 LR is not generally considered to be a defensive cartridge.

Maybe they should develop a 22lr division to attract more participants. Especially with the economy as it is.

its a sizeable initial investment but in the long run reloading pays off. once i get back into IDPA reloading will be the only way i'll be able to afford to do so. even the few matches i've done already i probably wouldn't have been able to afford the match and the ammo. while .22 is a nice idea don't think it will fly. how about finding an out door range where you can set up your own IDPA type stages? I know on my range we can do that once we're qualified for that part of the range. just a few tips

    Yup.

That's the only way to do it unless you're independantly wealthy. I'd start looking at a Dillon.
