First trip to the range -- it was AWESOME!

Thanks to all for the pre-trip advice.

Well, It was more fun than scrapbooking.

    Just kidding. I don't scrapbook.

It was AWESOME! I think I'm totally hooked on a new hobby now! I got there early for what was supposed to be a 1 hr thing, we had no much fun, we stayed for about 4 hours! Two of my CCW instructors came, and brought everything I would need -- bless them.

I had something with a .22 conversion, but it kept jamming and doublefeeding, they said it was something to do with a wax build up. (??) But I got real hands-on experience at clearing the misfeeds, so that was pretty cool.

I ended up with a Walther 22LR, I believe, and I really had a great time with it! We worked on stance, follow through, grip, rhythm, and eventually we had those targets with the 6 numbers on them, and they would call out a series of how many shots and which numbers, right or left (we had two targets), so I got to work combinations. I loved it! We moved up from multiple targets to different distances, and finally moving forward and backward while shooting. Also did some work on drawing from holster, etc. Too much fun! Gotta go back again soon!

I got to try out a Glock 9mm, a HK45 compact, a hammerless 380 (it was teeny-tiny, it was one of the instructor's wife's carry gun) which I think was a Kel-Tec (but I was on information overload at that point), and then afterwards just for fun, a shotgun!

As we were packing up, this guy came by with some really cool-looking thing. I figured it was a rifle, and he set the target waaaay far away. I think my instructors were drooling, so I asked them what it was, and they said it was like a $6000 sniper rifle! Yep. The guy said he was breaking it in (and running a brush through it every third round, since he had just put the first 40 rounds in it recently) and then...okay, this is the coolest part...he asked me if I wanted to try it out!!!

Of course, I did, and it was fantastic! I got to shoot the silhouette target right through the solar plexus!

The negative: not enough hours in the day, not enough ammo. Also, the FOP range is outdoors, and it was cold and wet today. Still, a small price to pay for how much FUN it was! Also, didn't get to shoot a Sig. Still dying to try that.

The positive: my instructors were happy. They were really impressed with my accuracy (my dad was a sharpshooter, maybe it's genetic?), especially since I've never fired a handgun before. And they said I had no flinch and excellent follow-through, though I'm still fuzzy on what that is. But at least I'm confident that I'll be able to pass my CCW class next month! And they said the FOP has associate memberships, so I can get one and head up there any time -- which is great, because it's much closer to my house than any of the public ranges. By a good hour or so!

And yes, I remembered to breathe, and relax, which REALLY helped. Thanks again, all! And if anyone wants a range buddy near Charlotte, PLEASE let me know, I can't wait to do it again!!!

Well we're glad you had an awesome time. What range was this? Im not too far from Charlotte and would love to find an actual range for certain days.

Glad you had a great time...every trip to the range is a great time.
In fact, a bad day at the range is much better than a good day at work.

Great report Bunny, glad you enjoyed yourself.
The wax build up they mentions was from the .22 bullets, a lot of manufacturers use a waxy lube on their bullets. If allowed to build up it can gum up the works and cause malfunctions.

Glad you had a good time. I bet you can't wait till you get to go back.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

    Totally!

My neighbor was so excited, she's taking the CCW course with me, and she also wants to get a membership to the range! Now we just have to go shopping so we can have our own...good thing the gun show is in town next month.
