    Not being a 1911 expert, what i do know is that usually the size of 1911s is barrel length, being 3'', 4'', and the government model being a 5''. Some that you mentioned also have a shorter grip like the officers model i believe. Someone correct me if im wrong.

    Commander = 4" or 4.25"
    Goverment = 5"
    Officer = 3" or 3.5" with a shorter grip

    There exists a hybrid model which has a commander barrel and an officer grip
    Operator is a model put out by Springfield Armory

    Colt called it a "CCO" 4.25" slide/barrel on an officers frame. I carry a Les Baer "Stinger" which is the same design. SIG makes a couple models, and I believe that S&W does now too.

    It really is the best of both worlds. You get the reliability and shoot-ability of a 4.25" with the conceal-ability of an Officer's grip.

    Here's a quick photo showing all three:

    Full size-5 inch barrel, full size frame
    Commander- 4 inch barrel, cut down full size frame (dust cover shorter)
    Officer's- 3 inch barrel, small frame

    (side note: the Full size & Commander have been modified with different sights, forward slide serrations, mag-wells, ambi-safeties, grips, beaver-tail safeties & some internal stuff you can't see. The Officer's model is stock.

    Basically two sizes of grips, and many different lengths for barrel and slide. An Officer grip frame is shorter, the magazine will hold 1 less round. For barrel lengths they go 3", 3.5", 4", 4.25", 5", 6" ??" - and any barrel length can be built with either grip size.
