    Question Old .22 rifle with no serial number?

    When my uncle passed away a few years ago, he left his guns to me. Among them were a single shot .20 guage, a bolt action .22, and a half disassembled air rifle.

    I was trying to look up how old it is but it doesn't seem to have a serial number? I took the stock off and looked it over, but I couldn't find one on it anywhere. Anyone else run into this before?

    The only thing it says is;
    -Savage Arms-
    Stevens Model 73
    Westfield, Mass. U.S.A
    22 short, long, or long rifle

    Is it normal for old .22's to not have a serial number? Was it not a requirement years ago or something?

    I have an old 410 handed down from G-pa, and it has no SN either. Just remember when we were a freer nation, you could order guns from catalogs like Sears, and have them delivered--no forms, permits, questions.

    I have an old H&R Topper 20gauge single barrel shotgun that also has no serial number. For identification purposes, only, I engraved my SSN inside the receiver. I know that using the SSN was not a real good idea, because someone who stole the gun could also steal my identity. However, this was done back in the early 70s before Identity theft was a big issue.

    I have a Stevens .22 Model 15-A that was a mail order from Sears. I love that little squirrel killer. My guess is it is from the early 1960's.

    I believe it was the Gun Control Act of 1968 that required serial numbers on firearms. Those manufactured before that didn't need them.
