I think it's a misnomer to quantify a 50 BMG rifle as defensive.
Pistols and revolvers are defensive weapons. Rifles and shotguns are offensive weapons.
You can definetly offend some BG's with that thing.

Nice Looking Rifle i have always wanted one just never got around to buying one
It will reach out there. Defensive rifle? Naw , but still a fun gun. My friend owns a .50 BMG, we get to shoot it out into a military impact are , lots of old targets and miles of open backstop.
That's a healthy looking rifle.

I am contemplating one( a 50 tho i am not now leaning brand specific ) , as i expect a small windfall shortly maby a breeze fall ?? ( no not on taxes i seem to have to pay into that ) but i just dont know , i am having problems spending as much or more on a toy as i spent on my daughters first car lol , besides my cows eat enough i donno about feeding the sucker :P oO( should do a fine job on prarie dogs tho lol )

Me and a couple of friends routinely whack a 9 inch diameter gong with our .50's at 1000 yards if the wind aint blowin too much.
What kind of load are you shooting ?

The rifle has never been fired. This is a recent item and have not had the chance to shoot it yet. I'm not even sure if I can find a place to shoot it. The local PD's have a range that I have access to but the max distance would maybe be 300 yards. Some of the guys have been on my case about getting it out to shoot it but shooting this thing is expensive, $5.00 bucks a round is a lot.
Have you tried Milsurp ?
We can get it for 125 per hundred rounds.
Its even cheaper if you reload.I recently got 500 APIT bullets for 70 bucks at a gunshow

Long Distance DEFENSE? Somehow I think of that in the same terms as Military Intelligence which is to say an oxymoron. I think a prosecutor would have a GREAT TIME on that case. However, I personally understand the thrust of your assertion. Mine is a M1A SuperMatch with a 3x10 Shepherd Scope (range finding). With the preset BDC for Federal Gold Match 168gr BTHP, I can consistently hit a man sized target at over 600 meters. That figure, I think will stretch by another 300 meters as soon as I can find a KD range to test. The longest Known Distance public range in Florida is near Stuart, FL I think. Although our very own Trail Glades range here in Miami is expanding and will add such a range. I can't wait.Originally Posted by Kid1911
