I have one. I used it for a few years as my duty gun before transitioning to a semi-automatic pistol. It is a great revolver! And yes, while not super rare, they are popular with users, and thus you don't see alot of them on the market...at least I haven't in my travels.

The 681 is the fixed sight version of the 686, which was one of Smith's most popular revolvers ever. It is built on the L-frame, which is a heavier version of the K-frame, built to handle a steady diet of magnum .357 loads.

I would recommend getting it...I paid $275 for mine back in 1991 or so.

I've got one and love it. I also have a couple of 686's, the adjustable sight version. They used to issue them to the conservation officers until they switched to Glocks. All their 681's went to the crusher.

Pick it up if you have the means and the price is right. You won't be disappointed.

The total production of the S&W Model 681 was 53,180, from 1980 to 1992.

    Not especially rare.
