xd 45 compact is a great option! I just shot one at the range and per the previous, post, the recoil is minimal. I currently carry a g26 9mm and it is much snappier. With the xd 45 you get the 10 rd mag and the 13 rd mag with the sleeve so you get more versatility. The xd 45 feels good in your hand.
The XD is a great gun. As for recoil, the actual recoil energy difference between 40 S&W and 45 ACP in the same weight gun isn't really noticeable. There is a recoil calculator at handloads.com that can show you the difference in actual recoil energy. Below is a comparison I did for you. I used a mid-range bullet weight for each caliber (165 for the 40 and 200 for the 45), a maximum Titegroup charge for each as shown on Hodgdon's web site and the same firearm, a Springfield XD 4" Service Model.
