My wife was excited to watch the show beforehand, thinking that ABC would produce a fair, balanced portrayal of defensive firearms uses. Boy was she surprised! One good thing she did take away, however, was how important it is to train and practice. She's now practically pushing me out the door to attend the next force-on-force class that will be held in our region of the country.

IMO, this was a piece of propaganda designed to reinforce the campaign to disarm America. "What? You've heard of all the people buying firearms for self defense and you think you should too? Well, now listen to us and we'll tell you why you shouldn't even consider it!"

I was really ticked off when I heard Diane Sawyer say something like "We could not find even one credible source that believes owning a gun in these situations is a good idea."

    And this is balanced reporting?

My recommendation: hit the "off" switch, change channels, and don't patronize the advertisers.

There, now I feel better. Thanks for the opportunity to unload.

... there are 250 million guns on the streets...
4/5ths of which are relatively unusable for practical defense against crime. We'd be much better off if everyone went right out for a quality handgun and a CHL application. Having 200M pistols carried daily would go a long way toward stopping crime in its tracks.

I watched the program also. According to 20/20, there is no way that you can protect yourself with a handgun. Only the police, who are minutes away, can properly protect you. (Of course you are dead when they finally arrive.)

20/20 created a situation where only Superman would have the instantaneous judgement and reflexes to disable the bad guy shooter. It was over in 2-3 seconds. I doubt that the Bethlehem, PA cops who helped set up the excercise, would have done any better than the citizens did. Of course 20/20 didn't show how poorly the cops did.

If we sit and do nothing about this we have watched our 2nd Amendment Rights erode a little more. And in this day and age we can't afford that. We need to speak out. Here is what I wrote to ABC...

This was the worst example of biased one sided reporting I've ever seen. I will no longer ever watch 20/20 or anything Diane Sawyer is a part of and that includes Good Morning America. I am also taking the time to write to every national sponsor of the show to let them know I will never buy their product(s) again.

Here is a list of the national sponsors of the show. (thanks Pikachu711)...
    Dannon Yogurt, Dan Active
    Kohl's Department Stores
    Dove Soap
    Fidelity Investment
    Cialis Medication
    Dreamworks, movie producer
    Verizon Wireless
Abilify Medication - anti depressant medication
    Petsmart
    I-Phone
    NicoDerm CQ
    Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (Movie)
    ReMax Realty
    Bali Bras & Panties
    Sprint
    Reclast Medication
    H&R Block
    Fiber One Yogurt
    Verizon Wireless
    Traveler's Insurance

I have written each one of them this note...

I am taking the time to write you in response to your sponsorship of the TV show, If I Only Had A Gun. Aired on ABC 20/20 April 10. This was the worst example of biased one sided reporting I've ever seen. Obviously produced to support the producers preconceived views and not even resembling journalism.
The only way I have to respond to this is to never watch 20/20 or anything with Diane Sawyer again, and to let you know I will no longer be buying your product(s) because of your support of this affront to my intelligence and my 2nd Amendment Rights.

I urge all of us to do the same. Please feel free to copy and paste what I have written if you wish.

Exactly! It was the equivalent of sending in a SEAL team to take a handicapped person down.

Put the intended target front and center of the room and tell all the other occupants to drop to the floor. Diane Sawyer has little to concern herself with. Between what is likely a home in a gated community and limo rides to and from work. I wouldn't need a gun either. Nice job Diane, you deserve the yellow journalism of the year award.

I agree. A femoral artery hit will exsanguinate a BG in a matter of seconds. Especially if the blood is really pumpin' like it would be in a firefight. It would be a MASSIVE drop in BP and almost certain death if not addressed in a few minutes.

My thoughts exactly. So last night l looked up "gun show loophole", and here is what i found:

"A 1997 Department of Justice survey of 3,959 prison inmates found that only 2% stated that they had bought a gun used in a crime from a gun show.[10] The remaining 98% were obtained from other sources, in which the criminal had no direct connection with a gun show. The most common sources (35%) were family or friends.[11]"

Source: Gun show - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

[11] ^ "Federal Firearm Offenders, 1992-98" (PDF). Bureau of Justice Statistics. http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/ffo98.pdf.

The 2% number comes from the Dept. of Justice. So now 2%=majority.

This is the email I sent to as many of the sponsors as I could find a good email for. Hope I get some replies and don't have to cancel my Verizon phone.

    To whom it may concern:

Due to your support of ABC's broadcast of 20/20 on April 10 2009. I nor my family can no longer support your bussiness or service. If the views of this show are not the ones of your bussiness, and you would like my hard earned dollars. Publicly withdray all ads from ABC. I will be posting this email and all replies on like minded forums for all to see. I will also CC ABC for any input they may have. I will take no replies as proof you do not need my bussiness.

    Yours turly
    Bryan Jackson

Oh bye the way this is my first post here. Great site.

On the matter of the classroom "experiment":

    1) Of the mass shootings in the U.S. in the last 20 years (or ever, for that matter) how many involved a "sleeper" shooter disguised as a student/customer waiting to take out a CCW who may have responded to the initial attack? I have *never* heard of such a thing happenening.

    2) How many of the other students were hit by the shooter, other than the CCW'er? Yes, the CCW'er shot the teacher and then concentrated his effort on the CCW'er, hitting her as well. So two good guys down. But this means that the other students were *not* getting shot by the pre-occupied shooter.

    3) A proper experiment uses a control. The control would have been what we currently have: unarmed students in a classroom, with a shooter being uninhibited in shooting as many students as possible. The only limitations being time and ammo supply. Now you have a number of killed/wounded students to use as a baseline. Say 20 were killed/wounded. Now attempt with a CCW'er in place. Anything less is an improvement and lives saved.

Last night I read some of the posts on ABC's 20/20 forum:
Carrying a Gun Wouldn't Necessarily Get You Out of a Shooting - ABC News

Naturally, I didn't read them all, but the first few pages were what I would estimate as 10:1 *against* the yellow journalism and generally lousy reporting by Diane Sawer and the 20/20 team.

This is what ABC sent me back. No surprise here.

As you can imagine, we receive thousands of messages a day from our viewers and while we appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback regarding our programming, we are not able to respond to each one directly.

We encourage you to continue to communicate with us!

    Later Bryan

    And from Sprint

    Dear Bryan Jackson,

Thank you for contacting Sprint. I apologize on behalf of the Sprint
for the inconvenience faced regarding the advertisement of the ABC.

It is our policy at Sprint to make advertising decisions based on the

other offensive views. Our goal is to reach our current and prospective
customers through this venue; our advertising is not an endorsement for
or against any particular cause, candidate or political viewpoint.

While we understand your disappointment in the advertising placement, we
would like to suggest you contact the broadcaster (ABC) directly to
    express your concerns.

We value your business and appreciate the opportunity to address your
    concerns.

    Sincerely,

Please take a minute of silence in memory of Diane Sawyer, who I heard drowned in her BS last night after airing 20/20.

I guess that most of you not working in broadcasting like I do wouldn't know this but, if you did you wouldn't be surprised by this show. ABC actually stands for Absolute Bull Crap.

Plus, since Diane Sawyer, who I have heard from people who have actually worked with her is rather stupid, is as anti gun as any reporter can be.
